The university is in a distinct location in the east of Riyadh. It was inaugurated after the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud, announced during his reign, the establishment of the university in a ceremony to launch the first phase of Academic Buildings for Girls' Colleges in 2004 (G).

In 2006 (G), a Royal Order was issued for the establishment of the first university for women in Riyadh, under the supervision of the Ministry of Education (higher education). This included the six colleges located in Riyadh, in addition to a number of new colleges established for the purpose of women's education and development in the Kingdom.

It was accordingly decided to annex girls' colleges in Riyadh city to this university at the direction of the Prime Minister as a prelude to complete the establishment of Princess Nourah Bint AbdulRahman University. The university has been the start of girls' universities that the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' instructed to establish in several regions of KSA.

The university was inaugurated in 2007 (G), with the appointment of its first rector HH Dr. Al Jawhara Bint Fahd Al Saud. On Wednesday, 30-10-2008 (G), the university was honored with the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' placing the cornerstone for the university campus.

His Majesty at that time saw it best to change the name to Princess Nourah Bint AbdulRahman University (PNU); Princess Nourah being the sister of the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the late King Abdul Aziz Bin AbdulRahman and the pioneer of women's education.
