Sustainable Development

Ministry of Education seeks to achieve its vision of sustainable development to have such a development that address and deliver efficiently demands of the present, without compromising with the opportunities of future generations to fulfill their demands and aspirations.

In other words, to have such a development that nurtures the economy, builds generations and enhances the quality of living without compromising the nature and ecology of kingdom's resources. Following is a glimpse of the aims, aspirations, efforts and works of the ministry on the focal points of sustainable development to realize this vision.

Ministry aims to work and realize following objectives through sustainable development:

  • Bringing into effect, a broad, fair and quality higher education system for all society segments, to build human capital, required for sustainable development realization.
  • Encouraging continuous education and making its opportunities available for all.
  • Continues promotion and application of gender-parity (equality in access to education and learning for both the genders).
  • Achieve a fair, far-reaching and sustainable economic growth.
  • Put in place a solid higher education infrastructure to help achieve the objectives of sustainable development.
  • Raise the intellectual and scientific production levels, and build a stream that helps in compensating natural resources' consumption.
  • Conserve the environment and natural resources in ways, that guarantee its continuity (availability) for upcoming generations, including handling climate change and taking countermeasures to the decline of natural habitats.

As a part of the Saudi government body, the ministry is working on number of sustainable development focal points and seek to accomplish aforementioned aims.

Prominent focal points ministry is working on are:

  • Achieving society or human sustainability.
  • Achieving economic sustainability.
  • Achieving environmental sustainability.

For eventually establishing knowledge economy, ministry is initially working on to build knowledge society, and by simultaneously working on programs and initiatives and on the two major aims above.

Ministry has recognized the significance of transformation into electronic and mobile government platforms by considering its direct effects on all goals of sustainable development.

Among ministry's initiatives to leverage e-Government and mobile government and to accomplish above mentioned three focal points are:

  • e-Learning and distant learning.
  • Saudi digital library.
  • Open educational resources.
  • Electronic social participation.
  • Graduate's professional and academic capacity development e.g. Safeer Graduates Service.
  • Initiatives related to the environment and natural resources' consumption reduction.

Government and e-Services' contribution towards achieving sustainable development aims:

Along with these initiatives and projects, that works directly towards implementing sustainable development, ministry works on leveraging e-Government and mobile government principles and concepts and opportunities in their applications in all these initiatives, projects and strategic plans. 

These principles are:

  • Promotion of transparency and accountability (open data initiative).
  • Promotion of efficiency and effectiveness (e-Transactions).
  • Facilitation of highest quality higher education, offering equal opportunities to access knowledge, skillsets needed for society building, by identification of specializations and universities recommended by the ministry for those seeking to study abroad using recommended universities' system.
  • Promotion of community e-Participation.
  • Achieve economic sustainability by encouraging academic research, and assisting intellectual and scientific production and building human capital required for sustainable development.
  • Implement green government principles by transformation into full e-Transactions and reducing natural resources' consumption.
  • Continue implementing gender-parity in education and learning access in the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' external scholarship program.
  • Provide e-Services for private education licensing a measure to facilitate private sector investment in education for sustainable growth of the economy.
  • Contribute to reduce the percentage of teachers, men and women alike, who are serving the cause of education far away from there home, by teacher transfer service a measure that reflects on achieving social wellbeing.
