About KSA

An Overview:

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is an Arab Islamic state, the largest country in the Arabian peninsula situated at the strategic crossroads of three continents Europe, Africa and Asia. It is a home to several human civilizations and the cradle of the heavenly messages. Capital of Saudi Arabia is Riyadh.

KSA is renowned for the sacred sites of Islam. The two Holy Mosques' of Makkah Al Mukarramah and Al Madinah Al Munawwarah are the destinations of millions of Muslims annually for Hajj and Umrah additionally they visit other significant sites of Islam.

KSA is home to many noticeable events in the history of civilization, whether they be of  pre-Islam eras, or during the dawn of Islam or afterwards. Among these noted events is the establishment and unification of the kingdom by King AbdulAziz Bin AbdulRahman Al Saud. Saudi Arabia is considered as the world's first in oil production and reserves. KSA ranks tenth in natural gas production.

National Day:

KSA celebrates its national day on the first day of Libra, corresponding to 23 September each year, it marks the unification of the kingdom and its establishment in 1932, by HM King AbdulAziz Bin AbdulRahman Al Saud.

National Flag:

KSA flag is rectangular with a 2/3 width of its length. It has a green background inscribed in the middle with the Islamic testimony “La Ilaha illa Allah; Mohammed Rasul Allah” (There is no God but Allah; Mohammed is the Messenger of Allah) is written in white Arabic “Tholuth” script.

Beneath it is an Arab sword, the handle of which is turned to the direction of the flag’s mast. Flag of KSA must not be hunged at half mast, or touched to the ground or water out of respect for the Islamic testimony written on it.

National Emblem:

The national emblem of the KSA consists of a Palm tree on top of two crossed Arab swords. Swords symbolizes strength, stamina and sacrifice while the Palm tree symbolizes vitality, growth and prosperity.

National Currency:

Saudi Riyal is KSA national currency, convertible and divided into 100 halalas. The exchange rate is 3.75 Saudi Riyal per 1 US Dollar.

Measures and Weights:

Kilometer, Meter and Centimeter are used for length; and Ton, Kilogram and Gram are used for weight.


KSA follows the Islamic Hijri Calendar that commemorates 622 (AD) migration of Prophet Mohammed - Allah's blessings and peace be upon him - from Makkah to Madinah. 

A Hijri year is of 12 months, but the count of days is 10 to 11 days less than the Gregorian year. There are 29 or 30 days in a Hijri month.

Work Days and Hours:

  • Government organizations work from Sunday to Thursday, from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm.
  • Private organizations work from Sunday to Thursday in two shifts. Morning shift is from 8:00 am to 12:00 am at noon and the afternoon shift is from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

  • Banks work from Saturday to Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, some bank branches had weekend on Saturdays.

  • Shops and outlets are open from Saturday to Thursday from 10:00 am to 12:00 am, and open again from 4:00 pm afternoon to 10:00 pm in the night on all weekdays except for Friday where they open from 4:00 pm in the afternoon.

  • Work hours differ in Ramadan, government offices work from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, while shops are closed between Maghrib (sunset) and Isha prayer times.

Official Holidays:

KSA official holidays are:


Friday and Saturday.

Eid Al Fitr Holidays:

It starts from 25 Ramadan to the 5 Shawwal for a duration of 10 days extending up to two weeks (if it starts before weekend holiday).

Eid Al Adha Holidays:

From 5 Dhul Hijjah to 15 Dhul Hijjah for a duration of 10 days extending up to two weeks (if starts before weekend holiday).

National Day Holiday:

23 September.

Judicial System:

Constitution of KSA is Al Quran (Allah's Book) and the Sunnah (Traditions) of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s blessings and peace be upon him. Governance in the KSA and laws of the state derives its authority from the Al Quran and Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah.

System of governance in the KSA is Monarchical. King and Council of Ministers' are the regulatory and executive authorities of the state. Shura (consultation) council shoulders provision of consultation on general policy matters of the country headed by chairman of the council of ministers'.

World Rank:

KSA ranks first in production and reserves of petrol, fifth in natural gas reserves and tenth in natural gas production. Thousands of Muslims heads for the KSA for Hajj and Umrah and for visiting Makkah Al Mukarramah and Al Madinah Al Munawwarah, these visits necessitates provision of housing, catering and health services for the guests of Allah almighty.
