​​​Expansions of the two Holy Mosques':

​​​Expansion of the Holy Mosque - Makkah:

Since the era of King AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - the leaders of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia cared for the improvement and expansion of the Makkah Holy Mosque to accomodate the ever-increasing numbers of pilgrims. King AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul – gave utmost priority to this matter. 

In 1925, he started restoration with repair of walls, columns and the Holy Mosque's plate. In 1935, he ordered the restoration of the entire Mosque. 

Expansion of the Holy Mosque started in the era of King Saud Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud – may Allah have mercy on his soul – and specifically in 24-01-1956, and it was the very first expansion for 1096 years, since the last expansion of the Abbasside Caliph (Al Muqtader Belah) in 892. Before the first Saudi expansion, the area of the Holy Mosque was about 28,000 square meters, and its accomodating capacity was only 50,000 worshippers. This expansion took approximately ten years.

Expansions of King Fahad Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud:

This project is considered to be the biggest of the expansions of the Holy Mosque since 14 centuries, as the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' King Fahad Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul ​laid the corner stone of this huge project on 13-09-1988.

The expansion plan included the addition of a part to the mosque building from the western side, as well making use of the roof of the Holy Mosque which is about 61,000 square meters. Thereby now the Holy Mosque can accommodate about one and a half million worshippers during the season of Hajj, Umrah and Ramadan. Additionally, two new minarets were built bringing the number of minarets to nine, the height of each minaret is 89 meters.

Expansions of King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud:

​The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - ordered the implementation of the giant and historical project which includes the Holy Mosque, and the surrounding areas starting steering North to accommodate up to two million worshippers at a time.

It also included the expansion of outer plazas of the Holy Mosque, and in it includes utilities, corridors, tunnels and bridges prepared to evacuate the crowds, utilizing the "Terraces" for prayers, in addition to modern systems of waste disposal and security surveillance systems, as well as the development of the services which include air-conditioning, electricity, water stations and other stations that provide support to the Holy Mosque.

It is expected that after the completion of this huge construction, the expansion space would reach 1000,000 square meters, it is considered to be the largest expansion in the history of the Holy Mosque.

Expansion of the Masa'a:

King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul – ordered expansion of Masa'a within its legitimate boundaries, doubled up to 40 meters and four floors, the project was completed with extending the width to 40 meters from 20 meters, the new length of the Masa'a is 350 meters. With this expansion the total area of Masa'a was increased to 87,000 square metres. There are three floors for Sa'i the basement area is the additional one, which is meant exclusively for wheelchair bound pilgrims.

Expansion and Reconstruction of the Prophet's Mosque - Al Madinah:

Since the era of King AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - the country has always been taken a special care of the Prophet's Mosque - peace be upon him - and included it in projects of expansion and development. In 1951 King AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - ordered the first expansion.

King Saud Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - laid the corner stone of this expansion by laying four stones in the western wall of the Mosque. The project cost was SR 70 million. This first Saudi expansion was the biggest of its kind for the Prophet's Mosque since it was built. 

As for the second expansion of the Holy Mosque started in the era of King Faisal Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - which was the addition of an area to the existing building from the western direction.

Expansions of King Fahad Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud:

It is a part of the project of King Fahad Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - to expand and construct the two Holy Mosques'. He laid the corner stone of this project in the 20-09-1989. This project added a new building to the existing one. It also made Mosque's roof area useful for the prayer, which is about 67,000 square meter. After the expansion, the area of the Mosque became 165,000 square meter.

Features of King Fahad's Expansion:

Increased the number of the Mosque minarets to 10 from four, height 92 meters, addition of 65 new doors to the existing 16 doors. Now there are 81 doors, excluding the entrances which increased to 23 from seven.

Expansions of King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud:

The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - ordered the expansion of the Prophet's Mosque after this expansion the area of the existing Mosque to grow five times bigger, and to accommodate more than two and a half million (2,500,000) worshippers. 

The Prophet's Mosque also witnessed in the reign of King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud- may Allah have mercy on his soul​ - many quality services added to serve visitors and worshippers, including the manufacturing and installing of 250 umbrellas, these umbrellas will cover about 143 thousand square meters of the spaces surrounding the Prophet's Mosque on all four sides, as well as shading six tracks on the southern side, and the chamber of deaf and dumb, as well as the elevators leading to the roof, and 2000 vehicles for people with special needs for free. 

Some of the quality services provided in the Prophet's Mosque to the visitors by benefiting from the technology are: knowledge newsletter and e-Transactions, that are available to the beneficiaries including, some guidance through the huge plasma screens on both sides North and West, and the addresses of the pilgrims surrounding the Prophet's Mosque through GPS devices, guidance to the Prophet's Mosque facilities sites and services, and ways to get benefit from them.

Jamarat Bridge Project:

The holy sites of Arafat-Muzdalifah-Mina witnessed during the reign of King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - historical and unprecedented mega-projects and comes at the forefront is the Jamarat project (cost SR 4.2 billion) which made easier for pilgrims to perform rituals, without congestion or accidents.

It can accommodate more than four million pilgrims, consisting five floors, with a height of each floor 12 meters, with 12 entrances, and 12 exits on all four directions, as well as ports for emergency with a capacity of 300 thousand pilgrims per hour, also includes surveillance cameras working 24/7, and an airstrip for helicopters to address emergency situations.

Haramain Express Train Project:

The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques', King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul - ordered the enactment of the express train project connecting Makkah - Jeddah – Al Madinah. 

The project of the Haramain Express Train is a need of the hour for several very important considerations such as: Ever growing number of pilgrims, visitors and residents who usually visit Makkah and Al Madinah throughout the year in the seasons, holidays and vacations. estimated annual atransport volume for the train project is over three million passengers. 

The Haramain Express Train is a railway connecting the regions of Makkah and Al Madinah via Jeddah with 480 KMs length. In the first stage of the project is to build four stations for passengers, includes one station in Makkah and two stations in Jeddah (King Abdul Aziz International Airport and City Center) the fourth station in Al Madinah. The following stages include building the station in King Abdullah Economic City, featuring High-speed Train exceeding the speed of 300 KMs per hour. 

A double line with the length of 78 KMs linking Jeddah and Makkah, and shortening the journey between them to less than half an hour, the length of the line linking Jeddah and Al Madinah is 410 KMs, that will shorten the journey to about two and a half hours . The project has a vital role in the transportation of pilgrims between the Holy sites, especially in the areas of traffic congestion.

Zamzam Project:

The Zamzam project, this King Abdullah Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud's - may Allah have mercy on his soul - project is considered the first of its kind if compared with previous projects. SR 700 million station estimated to process five million liters of the blessed water each day through two main processing lines, each one using number of filters and a sterilization unit.

Ten million liters would be stored in a tank, from it water will be supplied to the Holy Mosque through four stainless steel pipes, each with a 200 millimeters diameter. Another two million liters would be supplied every day to a nearby factory for packaging purpose. The station boasts of buildings having reserve electricity generators producing 10 megawatts of power. 

lt also incorporates the latest technology for monitoring the purification process from the pumping of water from the well to packaged in containers. It has air-cooling, early warning, smoke detecting and sprinkler systems. Once the Zamzam water is treated and stored, it is automatically supplied to 42 distribution stations. Pilgrims and visitors can get 10 liter containers of the water at these points by inserting coins in special machines. One project involves improving containers of the blessed water in the Holy Mosque by making them more spacious and easier to fetch water.

King Fahad Holy Qur'an Printing Complex:

Amongst the top priorities of the kingdom's activities to serve Islam and Muslims is its care for the correct printing and auditing of Allah's Book (Al Qur'an), and get these copies to be distributed to all the Muslims all over the world. 

The Custodian of the two Holy Mosques' King Fahad Bin AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul -​ ​gave a special priority to this project as he ordered to build a Al Qur'an Printing complex in the Prophet's city for this purpose. He laid the corner stone of this project in October 1982, and inaugurated it in October 1984.

Minister of Endowments, Call and Guidance taken over the supervision of this complex. This project has many aims among them are: Printing the Holy Qur'an with different sizes and qualities, with a annual production capacity of seven million copies, recording the recitations of reputed reciters of the Holy Qur'an from the kingdom and other Islamic countries, and make the complex as a specialized scientific center in research of the Holy Qur'an's sciences.

Since the era of King AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul – Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gave top priority to support and help the Muslims all over the world. Kingdom of Saudi Arabia made available this support through specialized agencies established for this reason are: 

  • International Islamic Aid Agency 
  • World Assembly of Muslim Youth 
  • Saudi Agency for Donations Collections

Foreign Policy:

Since the era of the founder King AbdulAziz Al Saud - may Allah have mercy on his soul –​ the foreign policy is based on principles and bases rooted in the ules of Islamic Religion and original Arab traditions. 

The main characteristic of the foreign policy is to support Arabic and Islamic solidarity, defense of the just Arabic and Islamic causes, serving Islam and Muslims all over the world, maintaining the international stability and peace, and non-interference in other countries internal affairs and not allowing others to interfere in its internal affairs.
